Want to bring the snow indoors without melting for fun sensory play?

K

Then make sensory snow!  This activity can be done with children as young as 16 months with supervision.

With just two ingrediants and a few accessories, your toddler/child will have a fun afternoon!

Sensory play is so important, as well as is a great way for children who live in a warm climate to experience snow!

Below is a basic recipie with ingredients most people have in their own home.

Snow Recipe

*3 cups of baking soda

*1/2 cup of any white conditioner

*disposable foil turkey pan or large sterno pan one per child

*measuring cups, spoons, figurines, cars, twigs, snowman mini accessories (found at Michael’s or most craft stores)

*disposable table cloth

Directions:

1.) Cover a workspace with the disposable table cloth.

2.) In the foil pan pour the baking soda into the pan.

3.) Next add the conditioner and mix with your hands until a snow like consistency. Note- Some children might enjoy mixing with a spatula versus their hands.

4.) Afterwards give your child a variety of things to use with their sensory snow like small figurines, cars, cups, spoons, mini snowman accessories, etc.

Note- I usually double the recipe for older children to have more snow to play with.

One of my friends in Florida took my recipe to the next level and let her daughter and friends use it for a snow ball fight outside! ~Love it!

Looking for a teachable moment over the holiday with your children?

Then do something for someone in need!

Every year our children choose something to do for others.  This year our son chose to, “Elf” a family who lost a loved one.  He thoughtfully wriote a letter, and each night for 24 nights has been leaving a small gift at their door.

Our daughter choose to take all of her gently used or new toys that she didn’t want and wrap them for homeless children.  We purchased gift basket bags and ribbon at Michael’s craft store to make them easy to give out.

She and three of her best friends worked for over four hours separating, packaging and wraping each gift to make it special.  It was one of the most memorable days we all will treasure!

Afterwards they packed our truck with NINE garbage bags to deliver and disperse the gifts.

The organization invited them to bring the gifts inside and visit their food pantry, clothing and toy room which was a teachable moment!

Doing something for others is one of life’s greatest gifts, as well as appreciating what you have is so important to teach your children.  It is that moment that is a priceless gift!

Looking for your children and family to use less electronics?

Then order a charging station and set a time limit!

In today’s world we are all guilty of using hand held devices including myself!

Children and teens are up all hours of the night causing many issues in school!  Tiredness, lack of focus, and some grades are affected as well!

I found that by powering off at a particular time truly works, and is life changing!

We keep a charging station in the kitchen which is a common space, as well as a great place to see all devices.

Set up a time in which all devices are checked in and powered off for the night at a charging station.  As I have mentioned to clients of mine, “You are the parent!”

This tip will do wonders for your family and you will not regret it!

Amazon has a variety of colors, how many docks you need, as well as seperate plugs for each Smart decive.

It is one of my top pick gifts for families! Enjoy!

Looking for a day with your family to treasure?

Then head to the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx to experience the Chihuly exhibit!

From April 22-October 29th this magical installation will be for all to see from Spring until Fall!

Whether you live locally or are looking for a great getaway, this trip is a must with your family!

This past weekend I took our children for a day that turned into a magical adventure, exposing them to art, nature, science, appreciating the world around us and so much more!

Glass artist Dale Chihuly’s sculptures are on display both throughout the garden, as well as inside the conservatory.

If you have a Smartphone then the added bonus is an interactive guide which makes your finding each work of art a cinch!

The Children’s Adventure Garden is a must for the kiddies, and it will be a day to treasure!

My tip pack a few snacks, some H2O, a picnic lunch, or have lunch either sit down at the Hudson Garden Grill, or fabulous made to order pizzas/sandwiches/salads/snacks at the Pine Tree Cafe!

Want to teach your child/tween/teen a great way to get out of a bad situation?

Then teach them my great trick!

If your child feels like he/she is in a bad situation, is experiencing peer pressure, bullying or just wants to come home from a friends house come up with code letters or a word!

For example, if my son/daughter types the letters XO on their mobile device then I make up an excuse of why I have to pick them up, or need them home.

This way your child will be less likely being called names, or more importantly feeling weird or uneasy leaving or calling you.

Also if a friend checks their phone and sees a letter(s), they wouldn’t think any of it.

The importance of giving to others…

IMG_5956

Throughout the year our children volunteer for various causes and charities in which we choose as a family.

A few weeks ago Bambino Chef in Jersey City, New Jersey hosted a day for children to make sandwiches for local homeless shelters.

They tirelessly made over 800 sandwiches with the help of many little amazing hands topping their quota!

What drove them you ask?  Hearing from others how those very sandwiches were for some the only meal that they had, which had an impact on all of the children.

Whether it be giving of your time, items, or a donation teaching your children to help others and to be empathetic is one of life’s greatest gifts!

Looking to make forever memories with your children?

Then find an experience or a, “first” to do with them!

This year I am all about, “experiences” with our children, or giving the gift of experiences!

Today on our children’s day off from school I took them to the top of One World Trade Center in New York City.  Watching their expressions, wonder inquisitiveness, and knowledge brought tears to my eyes.

Our daily lives, schedules, routines, and technological advances in the world can sometimes make us loose sight of things.  It’s not the materials things children really want, it is time with you!

Whether it be a, “first”, place to visit/vacation, with one or both parents, family or friends, this will be most memorable and forever ingrained in their minds!

Think about the mind of a child, they might reflect about a specific toy/electronic and forget about it in time.  What they will remember are things like when you taught them to ride a bike, baking cookies, the first time they went swiming in the ocean, being a guest in their classroom, going on vacation, coaching their sport’s team, a family movie/game night and the list goes on!

Seeing things through your children’s eyes is one of life’s greatest gifts, and in turn will be in theirs!

Looking for things to do on a snowy day with the kiddies?

Then enjoy doing special things indoors and outdoors, putting the f in FUN!

There is nothing I enjoy most then to have our children home experience things on a day off from school.

Doing things that you normally wouldn’t do on a daily basis, makes it even more surprising for your children!

A few of my snow day fun activities, tips, products and things to do will make a day off a memorable one!

Trying to keep the kids busy before you are ready to go outdoors can be challeging.  I find that begining the day with arts and crafts and projects is the way to go for sure!

IMG_5780

Crayola arts and crafts, Magic Science or experiment kids are fun for your little scientist,  CraZ My Look spa kits for your little diva are fun to do pedicures/manicures, Lego sets are always wonderful for your arcitect, Fortamajog DYI tents/forts are one of my top choices, and a DVD or rental of a movie your child has wanted to see is a plus!

IMG_5775

Whipping up white or milk chocolate hot cocoa, baking cookies, making pizza, snacks or lunch have so many wonderful skills.  Math, science, understanding directions, promoting life long skills, as well as doing something special together.

IMG_5766

Take going down the hill and make it a little bit more adventurous! Fun tubes from Big Mouth Toys, new and improved snow disks, snowboards, scooters, and snow skates!

IMG_5760

Playing in the snow is now at a different level!  The IDEAL company’s cool products like castle and snowman moulds, snow lights, snow ball makers, paint, snow cylinders, snow rulers make playing in the snow that much more fun!

IMG_5772

Getting the kiddies back in the house is always difficult until now!  Before going back in I fill a Rubbermaid tub with snow and place a beach towel on the floor or table, grab figurines and let the kiddies have a blast!  Have them keep their gloves on to prevent frost bite or cold fingers, while you make some cocoa and coffee or tea for yourself!

Snowballs in the house?  YES!  The Snowtime company has inflatable forts, shields and soft snowballs make staying in the house a piece of cake tantrum free!

Take it from a Mom who knows how to make a snow day a fun and memorable one!  Enjoy!
